[Review] Steinhart Ocean One 39 GMT vs Ginault Ocean Rover 181870GSLNDI just received my Ginault Ocean Rover last week and thought I would do a write-up comparing it to my well loved Steinhart Ocean One 39 GMT.. My take on the situation, two years after the above article and post, is that the controversy ultimately amounted to some overly zealous marketing claims on Ginault’s part and some legal red tape around the words “Made in USA” vs “Hand Built in America”.. Whereas the modern cars are focused on pure innovation, and the genuine classics are being traded for millions just to be tucked away in a garage to appreciate.. I know a GMT diver and classic 3-hander aren’t a perfect comparison, but I thought it would be interesting to compare quality of finishing of one of the more well known homage brands against the brand that allegedly offers the highest quality homage. I also doubt anyone who is considering purchasing a Rolex or other high end brand is going to change their mind and buy a homage instead.. Going back to my car analogy, theres plenty of room for people to enjoy the genuine vintage models, new models, and homages paying tribute to them, without anyone bumping into each other.. Frankly if some of the smaller details like whether traveled great distances to obtain the sand used in the lume, or developed a unique copper alloy to use in the movement, dont concern me, so long as the watch is as well finished and durable as it is presented to be..
